Workshop Description
Week One | Seasonal Gnomes
In this integrated workshop, the students will be guided in woodworking and handwork to fashion gnome furniture with wood and four seasonal gnomes with felt and yarn. It is a two-part Zoom workshop with instructors Dr. and Mrs. Tan that encourages fine-motor development and imaginative play.
Week Two | Bees & Butterflies
Our appreciation of nature is expressed in this session's theme of Bees & Butterflies, where students engage in woodworking and handwork. The students will assemble a bee house featuring hollow bamboo rods that invite the bees to make their homes, and students will needle-felt colorful bees and butterflies from wool.
NOTE Recommended grade range is 2nd - 6th grade.
Enrolling children younger or older is at the discretion of the parent/caregiver.
Younger students may need adult supervision.

Syrendell Summer Camp Instructors
Rick Tan
Woodworking Teacher | Grades Track Dr. Tan loves the sound of hammers hammering and sand paper sanding! He enjoys sharing the process of transforming wood into beautiful and functional pieces. He is a Waldorf-certified teacher who has taught at public schools, private, and homeschooling programs, as well as for adult workshops. Dr. Tan holds an MD and a BA in biological sciences. He is an artist, musician, and craftsperson, who co-founded Syrendell with his wife Jennifer. They have four children and live in Davis, CA, with two bunnies and two cats. |
Jennifer Tan
Handwork Teacher | Grades Track Mrs. Tan says one can never have enough yarn! If it can be carded, spun, dyed, woven, crochet, knitted, and felted, wool is magically transformed into art in Mrs. Tan's hands. Her teaching and administrative credentials, along with being a business owner, and homeschooling mother of four make her quite the jane of all trades. Mrs. Tan has a BA in classical civilizations and an MA in educational administration. She has been teaching camps for over fourteen years. If she is not spinning yarn at home, she is at a yarn shop. |
